Sam’s Waterside, Brentford

If you haven’t heard the buzz around Brentford, West London’s bustling waterside destination, it’s time you mosey on down. The Ballymore Brentford project has been in the making for many years, as residents will know, but it’s in the past twelve months that the wheels have truly been in motion. Amongst the roster of exciting new venues popping up on Brentford High Street, Sam’s Waterside restaurant is a bit of a gem in the crown of this exciting hub.

Set against the backdrop of the historic Brentford Docks, elegantly perched beside the scenic harbour side location, Sam’s oozes a sophisticated vibe without the stiff upper lip. There’s a warm and welcoming feel to the restaurant; a laidback and cool aesthetic makes for relaxed cocktail drinking at the bar while diners sit at warmly lit tables, and there’s an electric, out-out feeling in the air. The décor is chic and beautifully done to a contemporary brasserie style, with no expense spared where detail is concerned. It’s no wonder the restaurant has recently been announced winner of the Liv Hospitality Design Awards, 2023.

To Drink

Christian was our waiter for the evening. We had barely ordered drinks when two customers came over to personally thank him for his service, and by the end of our evening, we could see why. Attentive, knowledgeable and passionate, Christian guided us through the evening faultlessly. The cocktail menu at Sam’s offers a fantastic range, and after a bit of guidance from our sterling waiter, I opted for the Cucumber jalapeno margarita – it did not disappoint: refreshing and balanced but with a good kick on the finish, ideal for those with a penchant for spicy margaritas. The wine list is generous, with an impressive selection of 55 international bins. I tried two reds alongside my main (mentioned later).

To Eat

We started with some small plates and opted to share the Parmesan Churros, which were fluffy, slightly crisp, and sprinkled with plenty of the good stuff—super moreish, to say the least. Alongside this, we went for the Portland Crab Toast, fresh and perfectly seasoned yummy bites of heaven. We had to stop ourselves from eating more of these, but they are a must-order.

If there’s an option for something raw, nine times out of ten, I’ll opt for it. So, the Loch Melfort Trout Tartare was always going to be my starter of choice. A plate of zingy chopped trout, finished with ponzu, jalapeno, sesame, crème fraiche and apple. It was as good as it sounds, if not better. The flavours were so cleverly put together and well-balanced – all of the best flavours in one dish.

It’s a good job we didn’t fill up too much on the starters because, for the main, I ordered the Roasted Pork Collar, complete with pepperonata and oregano, with a side of pink fir potatoes and grilled courgettes, accompanied by a glass of smooth and easy-drinking Languedoc, after a bold, slightly fruity Montepulciano to wash it all down.

Ok, pudding was a push; we were full, and I mean full, at this point. But alas, there was room for the Chiswick House Rhubarb & Custard Crème Brulée, Shortbread, and it was delectable. If you’re a fan of the classic rhubarb and custard, this is for you. Creamy, light enough to fit in (even after a big meal), but packed full of flavour.

The cocktails had been quite the hit, so we left on a high and had the espresso martini to finish. It was ice cold, strong, and smooth, which is just how I like it.

In a Nutshell

I’ll certainly be visiting again, but I’m holding out for the sunshine to experience Sam’s Waterside al fresco next time. With views like that, quality service and a gorgeous menu, I reckon this is set to be the Brentford destination of the summer.
